We write and mail

Each month a new letter from one of four characters ships to your child's address. We rotate through Einar (Iceland), Lucas (Brazil), Amara (Kenya), and Hana (Japan) across the year.

They solve the mystery

Your child gets their own mail — their name on the envelope, a story that ends with a mystery, and a puzzle tool to crack it. Then they wait for the next one.

Four friends. Four countries.

Each character has their own voice, their own world, and their own mystery to share. Letters arrive in order — starting with Einar in Iceland, then Lucas, Amara, and Hana.

Einar

Iceland

Einar lives on a sheep farm in the highlands outside Reykjavik with his father and his afi, his grandfather, who knows the old sagas and carves runes into driftwood. Einar has been learning what they mean.

Lucas

Brazil

Lucas lives in Salvador with his mother, his cousin Danilo, and a rotating cast of aunts and neighbors. He draws on everything and has been learning capoeira since he was six.

Amara

Kenya

Amara lives in Old Town Mombasa with her mother, her grandmother Bibi Fatuma, and her twin brothers, who she describes as completely feral. She notices everything and writes it down.

Hana

Japan

Hana lives in Kyoto with her parents and her grandfather Ojii-san, who tends his garden like it's a full-time job. She is playful and precise in equal measure, and she notices everything.

What's actually in each letter?

Each mailer includes a physical mystery letter from one of four characters (Einar, Lucas, Amara, or Hana), a puzzle tool to solve the hidden clue inside, and a simple recipe from the writer's country. That's it — no box, no extra packaging, just real mail.

How does the mystery work?

The letter tells a story with something hidden — a coded phrase, a clue, a pattern to find. Every letter comes with a puzzle tool sized to that mystery. The format changes each time, so each one feels new. Mysteries are self-contained, so your child doesn't need earlier letters to solve it.

What age is this really for?

Clueling is written for ages 6–9. The letters are easy enough for early readers to follow with light parental help, and engaging enough that confident readers 8 or 9 can solve the mystery entirely on their own. A read-aloud for a 6-year-old is just as valid as solo reading for a 9-year-old.

Can I give Clueling as a gift?

Yes — choose any plan at checkout, enter the child's name and shipping address, and the letters will go directly to them. The 12-month plan at $120 is our best value and most popular gift option. A gift note is included in the first letter.

Which character writes first?

All subscribers receive letters in the same character rotation — Einar, Lucas, Amara, Hana — so the first letter that ships after your subscription starts is whoever's turn it is in the current cycle.

Can I pause or cancel?

Yes — pause for up to 3 months or cancel anytime from your member dashboard. Cancel anytime from your member dashboard. Your letters continue through the end of your current cycle and your subscription won't renew after that. No phone call, no email required.

How long does shipping take?

We ship via USPS. Your first letter ships within 3–5 business days of subscribing. After that, letters go out at the start of each month. Most arrive within 5–10 business days. We'll send tracking when yours ships.

Who is actually writing these letters?

The letters are written by the Clueling team in the voice of each character — Einar, Lucas, Amara, and Hana are fictional characters created for the series. They aren't real pen pals, and your child won't receive replies. Think of it like a chapter book that arrives in the mailbox: the characters feel real, the mystery is real, the recipe is real — but the writers are the people behind Clueling.

Can my child write back?

Not directly to the characters, since they're fictional. But we'd love to hear from your family — if your child solves the mystery, tries the recipe, or has something to share, you can email us at [email protected]. We read every message.

Do the characters change?

Yes — Clueling rotates its cast of mystery writers each year. Einar, Lucas, Amara, and Hana are this year's pen pals. When a new year begins, a fresh group of characters takes over with entirely new stories, mysteries, and recipes. Returning subscribers get a whole new set of friends to hear from.

Will my child miss anything if they subscribe mid-year?

Not a thing. Each letter is completely self-contained — your child doesn't need earlier letters to enjoy or solve the current one. Jump in any time and it works just as well as starting from the beginning.

What happens when my plan ends?

Your plan auto-renews at the end of each cycle so the letters keep coming. You can cancel anytime from your member dashboard — your letters continue through the end of your current cycle and no further charges are made after that. No phone call, no email required.

“When the children in my family were small, I started sending them mail. Not cards tucked inside something for their parents — real letters, their names on the envelope, addressed just to them.

It became a tradition. And every time, I would hear the joy in their voices when they called to tell me they had gotten something in the mailbox that was just for them.

That feeling stayed with me. Clueling is my attempt to give more children that moment — a letter that belongs entirely to them, from a friend somewhere in the world, with a mystery waiting inside.”
